Complex WMS System for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses (SMB) in Logistics

Project Overview

Developed as a final project during my studies, this complex logistics system was built to simplify product picking and shipping in SMB warehouses. Recognized as an Outstanding Final Project at Netcraft Academy.

Objective

The goal was to minimize delays and errors in picking and shipping through an intuitive digital workflow integrated into existing systems.

Challenge

The challenge was to design a system tailored for SMBs without requiring costly, dedicated equipment — enabling coordination across departments, real-time communication, and ease of use for non-technical users.

Solution

A digital system was developed for SMBs to streamline logistics through automation and AI, enabling clear communication between departments. Intuitive design supports non-technical users, with real-time tracking.

Process

Understanding the Market: The project started by reviewed existing logistics systems to spot gaps in picking and shipment tracking, and analyzed competitors to understand industry norms and user frustrations.

Target Audience: SMBs in the logistics sector — including importers, distributors, and warehouses — who need an efficient, simple way to manage daily operations.

Interviews and Observations: On-site interviews and observations with SMB logistics staff revealed key pain points in picking and shipping. Real-world testing highlighted system inefficiencies.

Why These Problems Matter: These problems slow down operations, increase costs, and damage customer trust due to delays and lost shipments. Teams spend time solving preventable issues instead of focusing on meaningful work. Fear of technology also limits the company’s ability to grow.

Synthesis & Design Insights: Based on the research, the future solution should streamline operations, reduce manual work, and improve visibility and communication. It must avoid costly hardware, work on standard mobile/tablet devices, be easy to use for non-technical users, and give managers control across departments.

What Didn’t Work - Lessons from the First Design:

What was tested:

A proposed layout for the assignment screen was evaluated. It showed all drivers and delivery partners in one view, allowing orders to be dragged and dropped onto them

The Problem:

Users had to click into each driver to view assignments, which lacked clarity under time pressure. The layout wasn’t intuitive for non-technical users and led to errors.

Usability Testing: The interface was tested with logistics professionals to verify its clarity, ease of use, and suitability for day-to-day logistics operations.

Visual Identity: A clean, minimal design with limited colors was used to support clarity, reduce stress, and create intuitive interactions, especially for non-technical users in fast-paced, high-pressure logistics environments.

Conclusion

The process and testing led to a solution that simplifies logistics workflows and improves communication between teams, with AI used to shorten processes and reduce errors.

What I Learned

This project taught me how much small interface decisions — like when to reveal a button — can significantly impact the user experience. I learned the value of experimenting with different ideas and the importance of tailoring the interface to the behavior and mindset of real users.
